Hello everyone! I’m so glad you’re here!
If you’re a new subscriber, welcome to Reconnect and Befriend! This bi-weekly newsletter is a space for me to share about self-care and journaling, and how you can incorporate them into your life.
Lately I’ve been listening to past book club replays of “The Happiness Project”. And while I haven’t read the book, the book club had an interesting discussion about what your comfort zone and “where the magic happens.”
While comfort is something that is good, when we stay too long in our comfort zones, we might make ourselves be content with the things that will keep us stagnated, discontent and ultimately not happy. An example would be staying in a toxic job, but telling yourself that the pay is worth staying for. Or avoiding things that you’re afraid of doing like public speaking or networking even though it will lead to good opportunities.
“Where the magic happens” is when the change finally happens after stepping out of your comfort zone and making those necessary steps to get to where you want to be. This would be finally getting that job that actually has a healthy environment.
But what stops people from stepping out of their comfort zone is having to sit in the space between the comfort zone and “where the magic happens”. Basically, stepping into the unknown.
This journaling prompt asks you to reflect on the space between your comfort zone and “where the magic happens”:
For many people, and including myself, it’s so scary to step out of your comfort zone because the unknown has no guarantee that something will happen. The unknown is scary because anything can happen - failing and feeling awkward with making those first steps. The unknown might put us in a position worse than where we came from.
But also… the unknown can teach us to keep trying and trying again until that change feels natural. The unknown can lead us to possibilities that we wouldn’t have known if we didn’t come out of our comfort zone to begin with. The unknown can lead us to more clarity and knowledge about ourselves with just making the first step.
